Sage ( Salvia officinalis ), whose name derives from the Latin “salvare”, is a plant with stimulating, tonic, digestive and antispastic properties, although possibly its popularity lies in the fact that it is an excellent natural medicine in the treatment of diseases of the women, such as menstrual disturbances or hot flashes during menopause.

The benefits of sage for women have been known for centuries. We know that in the 15th century it was known as “holy grass” and that the doctor Enrique Cornelio Agripa recommended it for pregnant women, so that the delivery was not premature and to prevent abortions.

Salvia against night hot flashes

The night sweats can occur during menopause and also in young women as a result of normal variations in estrogen production. They usually occur one or two nights before menstruation arrives. These sweats are experienced by one in five women between the ages of 20 and 30.

The antisweat effect of sage is clinically well proven and is one of its most effective indications. Studies indicate that it is the tannins found in the leaves that reduce sweating.

In a study carried out with 80 patients with excessive sweating, who were treated with sage (with 440 mg daily of leaf extract or infusion) for 4 weeks, it was found that sweating was reduced by half, especially among people who took the extract .

Sage is also used to treat irritability, mood swings, and low libido. It also reduces pain caused by menstruation, as well as fluid retention.

How to take sage

You can take sage alone or combine it with other plants. You can mix it in equal parts with one or two plants among the following: yarrow, mugwort, black cohosh, sweet clover and yarrow.

Prepare the infusion with 3 teaspoons of the mixture per cup. You can take 2-3 cups a day.

It will also help you to include foods such as alfalfa or soy sprouts, pomegranate and yams in your menus .

It is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding because it reduces milk secretion.

Other indications of sage

Active ingredients (essential oils, triterpenes, and tannins) are found in sage leaves that destroy viruses and bacteria. They also have an astringent effect on tissues, especially mucous membranes. For this reason its use is recommended in the treatment of inflammations in the mouth and throat.
