When the prostate becomes enlarged or inflamed

The prostate, the male gland that surrounds the neck of the bladder and a portion of the urethra, is responsible for pouring the prostatic fluid into the urethra so that it mixes with the sperm when ejaculating and favor the movement of sperm.

When it increases in size it can cause varying degrees of urethral obstruction. Symptoms of a prostate condition are an increased need to urinate –especially at night–, difficulty expelling or retaining urine, loss of volume or dripping.

In young or middle-aged men, the most common condition is inflammation from an infection, while in those over 50 years it is hypertrophy or overgrowth of the gland. The acute bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by microorganisms in the urine ( E. coli or Klebsiella , among others).

It appears spontaneously and, together with the above symptoms, can lead to fever, chills and pain. On the contrary, chronic prostatitis does not usually give symptoms and, only sometimes, perineal discomfort, low back pain or urinary obstruction are perceived.

The prostatic hypertrophy affects most men passing fifty. When the gland enlarges, it compresses the urethra and causes difficulties in urination. It is a benign condition that is not related to prostate cancer, although they can sometimes occur together.

The causes of hypertrophy are hormonal, but certain foods can delay or relieve it, while those that irritate the urinary tract make it worse.

To protect the prostate and avoid infections, it is advisable to:

  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Empty the bladder frequently during the day and especially before going to sleep.
  • Avoid sedentary lifestyle, constipation, flatulent meals, cold and humidity.
  • Lie flat for a while after eating.
