The Sea, The Medicine Of The Future

It is emerging as the great healing resource of the next decades. There are many encouraging studies underway
The sea has healing power

The laboratories have been moved to the sea. Not only algae are studied: thousands of bacteria and microorganisms from the bottom of our seas have an incredible killing power on cancer cells.

At present, more than 7,000 drugs are being developed, of which 900 are biological in nature, 338 are indicated to fight cancer, 176 to eradicate infections, and others to fight respiratory, neurological, digestive diseases or diabetes. Most come from the land, but the sea is the great reserve that we have left. Hence the effort to maintain maritime ecosystems and enhance biodiversity.

Starfish and other ocean inhabitants possess anticancer qualities

Two examples that show us the incredible healing power of the sea : the starfish has anticancer qualities and in the gorgonians, invertebrates of the same family as the hydras or jellyfish that inhabit the South Seas, there are numerous antimicrobial and antitumor extracts that they also act on leukemia.

Protect the seabed

Depleting the resources of our seas and oceans and depleting their funds can not only turn into an ecological disaster. We now know that the oceans contain much greater biodiversity than the land, and its exploration from the point of view of searching for new chemical compounds has only just begun.

The future of marine medicine involves the use of sophisticated molecular, genomic, cellular, robotic and even bioinformatics techniques. But the best news is that the entire scientific community agrees that it has only explored the tip of the iceberg of the potential that exists. Life began in the oceans and following a natural logic, the sea will restore us to health.
